The Technology

What is FDM 3D printing?

FDM (fused deposition modelling) is an additive manufacturing process in which a thermoplastic filament is heated and extruded layer by layer to build up a three-dimensional part. It is the most widely used 3D printing technology for functional parts and prototypes. FDM printers can work with a broad range of thermoplastic materials — from general-purpose PLA to tougher, impact-resistant PETG — and (with multi-material hardware) can produce parts in multiple simultaneous filament colours.

At 3D Quality Prints, all work is produced on FDM hardware operated by our specialist team in Wimborne, Dorset. FDM is the right technology for functional parts, replacement components, prototypes, and custom accessories — it handles a wide range of materials and geometries at a price point that makes single-part and small-batch production viable.

For applications requiring smoother surface finish, higher accuracy, or different material properties, we'll advise honestly if FDM is or isn't the right fit for your job.

Questions

Common questions about materials.

What is the difference between PLA and PETG?
PLA is easier to print and has better surface detail, but it's brittle under impact and softens at around 60°C. PETG is stronger, more impact-resistant, and handles higher temperatures (up to about 80°C). For functional replacement parts, PETG is usually the better choice.
Is flexible (TPU) printing available?
Yes. We print in TPU for flexible applications includinf seals, grip surfaces, and flexible hinges.
Can I request a specific colour in any material?
Most materials are available in a range of colours. PLA has the widest colour selection. PETG is available in common colours. TPU options are more limited. Include your colour preference in the quote request and we'll confirm what's available. Specific or unusual colours can often be sourced on request.
What's the maximum part size?
Contact us to confirm the current maximum build volume for your specific part. Larger parts can typically be split, printed in sections, and assembled — we'll advise whether this is practical for your design during the quote process.
Can you print parts that will come into contact with food?
Some PETG grades have food-contact-safe certifications. We'll advise on this for relevant enquiries. However, standard FDM printing has inherent porosity — parts are not recommended for direct food contact in most cases.
